My Odie. Yup, I’ve posted sweet photos of him before. But right now I don’t feel that he looks too sweet.
Let me tell you a little bit about him. In 2004 he was imported from Ukraine to a local bulldog importer. Unfortunately for Odie, he already had demodex mange (very treatable) and horrible teeth. The importer was going to euthanize him because she couldn’t get full price out of him and didn’t want to deal with the hassle of treating him. Thankfully a friend of mine who knew said importer stepped up and offered to take him off her hands. And into our life he came. It was the week before we were married, and we really had no clue about french bulldogs except that we knew he was CUTE! (Not a good reason to choose a dog!) But Odie has changed our lives. Why and how?
Odie is not healthy. He has hypothyroidism (easily treated) and horrible, nasty allergies. He also suffered through an undiagnosed issue that caused him to vomit blood and become extremely ill. Luckily that issue has seemed to go away and we haven’t dealt with it recently. But his allergies are in full swing, and he looks so pathetic and he literally brings me to tears. He is currently being treated by a holistic vet and we are hoping to see some results soon.
How did he inspire us into animal rescue? The fact is that most imported dogs and dogs from backyard breeders (BYBs) or puppy mills aren’t being bred to better the breed, but rather to make cute puppies. So the necessary health and behavior tests aren’t being done, and the chances of producing an ill dog are at a much greater risk. I’ve learned the horrors of BYBs, puppy mills, and importers, and I am inspired to make a difference. To help dogs that wouldn’t otherwise have a chance. To educate others about ugly breeding practices.

I choose to foster and volunteer through French Bulldog Rescue Network.
And here is my Odie, looking sad and pathetic:

How can you make a difference?
*Spay and Neuter your pets, stop contributing to the overpopulation problem!
*Volunteer at your local animal shelter!
*Foster through a shelter or rescue! (So rewarding!)
*Donate money to your shelter or a 501c3 rescue, it’s always needed!
*Assist transports to get dogs in rescue to their new homes, or their foster homes!
*Don’t buy your pets from pet stores or BYBs! Instead choose a reputable breeder who shows and health tests their animals, or choose to adopt!
*Educate others!
